How can I tell the difference between a fit and a faint?

At least half the population will faint at least once, most commonly as a child, during puberty or when pregnant. Faints are caused by a reflex slowing of the heart and they can be triggered by standing still for long periods, particularly in warm environments. I remember fainting in an operating theatre when I was 12. I had recently been an in-patient having had my appendix removed and was convinced I wanted to do medicine so persuaded a friend of my parents to take me into theatre to see what went on. It was a long operation and I rather unceremoniously passed out. I’m so glad it didn’t put me off following my dream!

Most people experience a feeling of nausea, sweating, and or light headedness before a faint. The period of unconsciousness is very brief. There may be associated twitching of the limbs, but often the individual will lie still. When they come round they may feel a bit washed out but there is not the confusion and drowsiness as there is in a fit. If in doubt, it is important that you report any such episode to your doctor and, if possible, take someone who saw what happened with you so that they can explain the episode to your doctor.
